Speaker Bio
Michelle Atkinson is a Horticultural Extension Agent III with UF/IFAS Extension, specializing in irrigation science, water conservation, and landscape sustainability. Her work focuses on delivering research-based education and technical assistance to landscape professionals, municipalities, and community associations throughout Florida.
A central component of Michelle’s Extension program is the development and delivery of pesticide and fertilizer applicator training. She provides continuing education opportunities for licensed professionals while also leading exam preparation courses that support individuals seeking state certification through both in person and online courses. Her instruction emphasizes proper product selection, label interpretation, calibration, environmental stewardship, and compliance with Florida regulations helping to equip participants with both the knowledge and confidence needed for responsible application practices.
Michelle is actively involved in interdisciplinary Extension efforts that address stormwater management and the use of alternative water sources, including stormwater ponds, for irrigation. They collaborate with local governments, utilities, and industry partners to advance best management practices that protect water resources while maintaining functional and aesthetically pleasing landscapes.
A key component of Michelle’s work is expanding the reach and accessibility of Extension programming. She is engaged in efforts to better serve diverse audiences by addressing language barriers and improving educational outreach to Spanish- and Creole-speaking communities.
Michelle regularly delivers presentations and workshops for industry professionals, community leaders, and the public, translating complex scientific concepts into practical, actionable guidance. Her work supports the mission of UF/IFAS Extension to provide solutions that enhance environmental stewardship, economic viability, and quality of life.
